This issue has a proposed fix upstream... http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2013-02/msg00853.html which hasn't been checked into either gcc trunk or gcc-4_8-branch. Once they commit a final patch into gcc trunk, I can backport that for gcc48 and stop building libffi.
