Again, as I said, that means only that none of the _base_ packages need
to be updated.
Also, the gcc48.patch file doesn't seem to have changed, and it still
doesn't contain the md5sum. Should I try the installation again, or is
my updating still wrong?

What do you mean "doesn't contain the md5sum"? The patch file doesn't
_contain_ that information.
To make things a little clearer, what do you get if you run the
following in a terminal:
md5 /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/languages/gcc48.patch
fink dumpinfo -fpatchfile-md5 gcc48
