It starts with

before the source are outpacked and continues during configuration:
checking for g++... no
configure: WARNING:
By default, distutils will build C++ extension modules with "g++".
If this is not intended, then set CXX on the configure command line.
This is quite strange, there is at least one "g++" executable available. And
config.log finally has:
CXX='g++'
The package is built in the end.
