In my experience, on MacOSX >= 10.6, you don't need to install xquartz unless you have special needs for the very latest version. In fact, the "stock" X11 *is* xquartz, just not quite the latest. MacOSX was a special case; for some reason or other, Apple was unable to ship a decent version of X11 with the OS. Despite several updates, they never got their act together.
