When it's not explicitly mentioned in the corresponding INFO file, then not. Although recently in another thread it came out that XQuartz 2.6.3 (or the later versions installed with MacPorts) is a more useful choice than the original Apple software. The fault you encountered can be caused by quite anything: some faulty font file, the recent version of freetype, a bug in GTK+2… It seems that just very few X clients trigger this. I think it won't happen that this or that GTK+2 programme could become listed as dependent from XQuartz 2.6.3 or such.
