Because this Perl version is not installed > in Mac OS X 10.6.8. For some semblance of compatibility, fink supplies the perl versions of several older OSX on certain platforms--especially the "one OS X previous standard". So OS X 10.6 is perl5.10.0 but fink also supplies 5.8.8 becuse that's what OS X 10.5 was. Of course one should tend towards using newer versions. But fink should do the right thing and keep doing whatever you were doing. This is a missing dependency in a package, which has nothing directly to do with the perl version. It only works at all on any platform because apple supplies some nonstandard perl features.
