Yes, there is only a problem with the symbol font.
I think that this is an X11 configuration issue as you suggest. The reason is
that when I sit at the terminal of a Mac Pro running OS X 10.6.8 and XQuartz
2.3.6 everything works fine. However when I remotely log in to that machine
from a Mac Pro running OS X 10.7.5 and XQuartz 2.7.5 and fire up xfig I get the
error message

> BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
> Request code: X_OpenFont
> xfig: figure empty or not modified - exiting
> Abort
when I try to insert text using the symbol font (other fonts work OK.)
Any suggestions?
