Probably safest, and I guess it should not be too painful if you restore your 
user settings and/or have a full
Tim Machine backup.
Apple does have the sources available here

https://opensource.apple.com/tarballs/python/

so I guess in principle it might be possible to do an xcodebuild of the latest 
version, but I’d certainly search for
additional instructions if you are inclined to experiment with this path.
