Alexander reminded me that I had avoided loading the entire Developer suite and 
so didn’t have the particular Xcode for Mac OS X 10.9.5, 

Devernay’s site http://github.com/devernay/xcodelegacy provides a good guide to 
legacy code for Mac OS X. I downloaded and installed Xcode 6.2 and reran Fink 
successfully.

I’m at the end of a long project using software that is not compatible with new 
versions of Mac OS X. Hopefully completing that project soon, and upgrading 
everything (and probably the hardware too).
