Sorry if my comment is somehow misplaced or off-topic, but I recently 
(yesterday) manually
updated matplotlib from 1.1.1rc to 1.1.1 on my Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) 
installation
and it stopped working altogether.  I reverted to 1.1.1rc and everything is 
(apparently) back to
normal.  Now I ponder on whether or not I should manually upgrade scipy and 
numpy.
