As you say, there appears to be no sense of urgency in the Trilinos community 
to make the upgrade. Unfortunate to say the least.

“…need to be on Python 3 for some reason”: I am evangelizing about Python to 
students, postdocs, and senior colleagues, but I cannot in good conscience 
recommend Py2, because of its looming obsolescence (Py3 is now seven years old!)

Running ‘2to3’ on the source code and building from there: this is expert-level 
stuff, from the perspective of your typical geoscientist, and not feasible 
except for the very dedicated. It’s a huge barrier to that key step in getting 
people interested: playing with demos before investing big efforts to get to 
know the tool.

Vaguely related: one of the big scientific Python holdouts against Py3 
migration, VTK, is inching closer to making the jump, which means MayaVi will 
follow shortly. So the last missing essential viz tools will soon be 
Py3-capable.  See thread here=
