When I came back to my computer after leaving it idle for 45 minutes or
so, Fire was using only 0.5% processor usage. Hmm. I quit and restart
it, and now it's back to using between 3-4%. Perhaps the OS X kernel
puts the threads to sleep if they're not doing much? Or Fire has its
own idle-sleep stuff?
