D'oh!
Well, after my gpgme library problem was resolved, I was able to build
and run the latest and now my pass phrase doesn't work.
I tried it in the version on the website and it accepted my pass phrase
(but the profile prefpane still didn't open for me) I tried signing a
file with gpg in the terminal and it accepted my pass phrase.
I typed it into BBEdit and made sure it was correct, pasted it in and it
still wouldn't accept it.
I pressed each button deliberately with my index finger to make sure I
typed it in correctly lol...
so now that i've convinced everybody that I couldn't have made a typing
error, why isn't it accepting my pass phrase? It's pretty long - over
30 characters
I thought I wouldn't be bugging you again :-(
