Of course! In no way would this be anything but optional, since it's not a
solution to everybody's IM needs, it's just there for those people for whom
it would work.
As to the idea of dragging items to the bar to put them on, that seems like
a good user-friendly way to do it except for the fact that if you drop a
user that isn't online onto the bar, it would effectively vanish (since
they're not online, obviously). That is a very bad thing to do to a user.
Plus, how would you take a user off unless they were online at the time?
Showing all of them probably wouldn't work, since probably a good number of
people would have too many people on it to show at once, they just aren't
all online at the same time.
Not that it's impossible, just that there's some other things that would
need to be figured out to do that...
