I too WAS experiencing problems using yahoo IM via fire. I posted an
unofficial note from a helpful, yahoo person who suggested that my problem
was with my login id and its format. See this link:

This may not apply to you, but it does reinforce Eric's point that AOL does
and has done strange and inconsistent things with regard to it's own IM
clients and it's ability to deal with 3rd party IM clients.
