Here's what I found in the file "fire.crash.log" when I went looking.
As I experienced it, over a half hour after I launched Fire, there
was a normal door-creaking sound of a buddy logging on, and then Fire
and another application (I don't recall which, but probably Eudora)
vanished in quick succession.

I got two "The application __ has unexpectedly quit" alerts
overlapping, noticed the console opening a crash log window, and
clicked on it to look at it. A moment later, the dock slid off the
bottom of the screen, the whole display turned blue, and the login
window came up. In other words, the whole UI crashed.

Instead of logging back in, I took the safer approach and clicked the
restart button to get things completely cleaned up.

This is a 450 MHz G4 desktop with 704 MB of RAM running Mac OS X
10.1.3. Apple System Profiler dump with additional info available
upon request.
