It’s true, I did think the list would be interested in the Springfield story. I thought it would interest people on this list for 3 reasons:

1)       the media generally doesn’t report defensive gun use, in part because it usually doesn’t occur in a newsworthy way (Crime Doesn’t Happen! Is not a great headline)

2)       the listserv has a lot of discussion on the topic of defensive gun use and while anecdotes aren’t data, they are useful in raising issues. I thought people might have interesting commentary on an aspect of the incident I missed. Since I teach Firearms Regulation at Case Law School, I’m always interested in Ohio-based news related to firearms to discuss with my class.

3)       Ohio has just had an extensive debate on concealed carry laws and that made news of defensive gun use in Ohio more interesting.

In response to “Mike’s” questions & comments:

a)       it would not be interesting to post every instance of a gun being used in a crime because most news reports already include that information. If there was unusual gun use in a crime, then it would be interesting to read about it.

b)       I have no idea where the ? marks came from in his version, but they weren’t my editorializing. I just forwarded the message I received. If anyone needs a clean copy, I will be glad to reforward it to them individually.

c)       Libertarians generally support concealed carry as a right, and I think that position is pretty well known. It didn’t seem necessary to do more than identify the post as being from the Ohio Libertarian Party to reveal the bias of the author and so I didn’t do more. I apologize if anyone was fooled by the authorship into thinking it came from an objective source like the Democratic or Republican Parties. Comments from any political party are obviously in tune with that party’s position on the issues.

Andy Morriss thought an article from the only party that
completely supports Ohioans right to carry."would be of interest to list members".

Actually I'd thought that an article that makes as many claims as that one does

about defensive gun uses, would be more appropriate for NRA's The Rifleman

or Guncite.

"Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as
many as 2.5 million times every year -- or about 6,850 times a day.  This
means that each year, firearms are used more than 60 times more often to
protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives, according to Northwest
University School of Law and the National Safety Council".

Does anyone know of a site available on the internet where
Northwest
University School of Law and/or the National Safety Council. has made those "claims"?

My OE e-mail version of the article contains numerous question marks. Is that a

form of editorializing?

Would it be appropriate for someone else to post any criminal use of firearms as

they noticed them, on this board?
