You gotta love spin.  From the cited article:
A closer look shows a troubling new trend: Almost 27 percent of all homicides, robberies, and aggravated assaults were committed with a firearm in 2003, the highest percentage since 1997, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports.
I did not bother to check their math, but instead decided to tally up the total crime count for these three categories.  In 1997, there were a total of 1,538,651 such crimes.  In 2000, 1,334,103.  A net reduction of 204,547 such crimes.  So as a percentage of total crime, it might well be higher, but the total crime rate is down and so are these specific categories.
