I just came across a new book:

Author: Hoffer, Peter Charles, 1944-
Title: Past imperfect : facts, fictions, fraud-- American history from
Bancroft and Parkman to Ambrose, Bellesiles, Ellis, and Goodwin
Published: New York : PublicAffairs, c2004.
Edition: 1st ed.
Material: xiv, 287 p. ; 25 cm.
Notes: Includes bibliographical references (p. [241]-272) and index.
ISBN: 1586482440

which has a full chapter (30 1/2 pages) "Falsification: The Case of
Michael Bellesiles" and I read that chapter. It recounts the events
from the point of view of an academic historian - and it mentions the
involvement of some people on this list. It makes no excuses for
Bellesiles - rather it is quite harsh.

  I got a sad chuckle out of a few lines - from p 143 - which brings
back memories:

"When conservative critics raise questions about the veracity
of the research and the validity of the conclusions, accuse
them of lacking expertise and exhibiting an excess of
partisanship. When fellow professionals begin to raise similar
questions about the work, claim that the NRA and its stooges
      are out to get him.
Bellesiles almost got away with it."
