Brazilians have soundly rejected a proposal to ban gun sales in a
national referendum that has stirred a fierce debate in a country with
one of the world's highest gun-related death rates.

With more than 95% of the votes counted on Sunday, 64% of Brazilians
were opposed to the ban, while 36% backed it, said officials at the
Supreme Electoral Court.
