What were the common venues for retail sales of firearms in U.K. (or at least England) before the beginning of their drive toward gun control?

I recall in the U.S. before the CGA’68 that hardware stores were as common (if not more common) firearm retail outlets are gun stores.

I’m asking because I have nothing that tells me how intertwined firearm presence as a daily cultural entity firearms were in the U.K. before the current push to control them.
