The simplest reason not to use a shotgun is the lever principle. As you go around a corner with the 18" or longer shotgun barrel extended in front of you, the bad guy grabs it and "levers" it out of your hands. Try that with a 2" revolver. The handgun is more secure and, at living room distances, an accurate and effective tool.
