The Winchester Model 12 "riot gun" of the period had a 17.5" barrel, a 
technicality the Washington State Patrol overlooked when it auctioned 
off several dozen such shotguns about 10 years ago.  Fortunately for the 
buyers, all of the guns were recovered.
