Another thought here is that you may need to call the cops to come
collect the bad guy. At that point, you may need to hold your phone in
one hand and your weapon in the other. A hand gun is not only easier
to hold (and, if need be, use) with one hand but safer.

Even absent the phone, the handgun is safer to carry. See, e.g., the
scene in Gran Torino.
