I saw this on the web (yes, that's why I'm trying to verify it): "Police officers commit assault-type crimes (beat wife, etc.) at a rate 8 times that of civilian permit holders."

Can anyone VERIFY this factoid?

I don't have any figures about such crimes among CCW holders. But I do have a pretty good source for these figures among LEOs. The magic number is one in ten, and those are only the ones who managed to get themselves on record doing it:

The article appears in the March 10, 1997 issue of Gun Week. It
cites a confidential survey of chiefs and sheriffs done by the National
Association of Chiefs of Police (NACOP). 11.4 of the pollees who
responded said that AT LEAST one of the officers in their command
would be affected by the Lautenberg domestic violence law and
rendered unable to carry a firearm.

The article estimated 600,000 officers nationwide, and estimated that
at least 60,000 would be affected.

These figures were reported by Gerald S. Arenberg, the Executive
Director of NACOP.

The survey was sent out to every NACOP member (all management level)
which is about 17,000 pieces. They had roughly an 11% response rate
(which he says is one of the best they've ever had) giving them almost
1900 responses. Of these, 11.4% or about 215, reported problems.

1900 is a pretty respectable sample size. Even though it is
self-selected, most neutral representative national surveys use sample
sizes between 600 and 1600.

Arenberg says that just prior to his survey results, the FOP released
similar figures: about 10% of their 240,000 union membership said they
would fall under the restrictions of this law.

He also mentioned that we should look for a book soon to be published
by a female psychiatrist in Oakland CA entitled "Loving A Cop." One
chapter discusses and documents the "shameful secret" that domestic
violence runs much higher than normal in police families.
