I was hoping someone on the list who is acquainted with
Massachusetts gun laws might e-mail me off-list about this.
I'll be visiting at Harvard from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31 this Fall, and
living in Watertown. I'd like to bring my handgun, my shotgun, or both.
I called the Watertown Police Department, and they told me that:
* I'd first have to take a gun safety class.
* I'd then have to come in to the police department, fill out
a form (for a firearms id card for the shotgun, and a Class A carry license
for the handgun, even if I don't want to carry it), and get fingerprinted.
* They would then send this in to the state, and it will take
*5 weeks* to get cleared.
Presumably, until then I can't even bring my guns into the state.
My questions:
(1) Is this indeed so? I have no reason to doubt it, but I'd
like to blog about this, so I wanted to check.
(2) Is there some other, simpler, procedure that I can use
instead?
(3) Is this a statewide requirement?
(4) Can you recommend some gun safety classes, and tell me how
much they tend to cost and how long they tend to take?
(5) On a related but different issue, what in practice would be
the easiest legal way for me to ship my guns from my home in L.A. to my home
in Watertown, once I do get the permits (if I get them)?
