South African authorities have begun rejecting over 70% of license applications for strange reasons, including "not living in the right type of house to have a gun," "applicant has not been attacked yet," and "applicant already has a husband to protect her." The real reason, it is rumored, concerns a secret government meeting where "it was decided that too many firearm licences were granted and that 80% of firearm licence applications must in future be refused." A public safety official told gun owners at a meeting that told us at a public meeting that "he would not disclose what a proper motivation for a firearm licence is, because if he did, all firearm applications would have the same one." For those who think this is just more bizarre third-world hijinks, I should add that I have personal knowledge of all three of the above reasons for rejection having been given to license applicants in Massachusetts, and I have heard the same "disclosure" argument voiced by Massachusetts legislators at a public hearing.
