It
might also be recalled that "gun owner" has different meaning in some surveys
from a person who personally owns a gun. It may include someone who indicates
that there is a gun in the household -- who may not even be aware whether the
gun would be classified in law as an "assault weapon" or potential "assault
weapon."
PHB
I can tell you from personal experience that
there are large numbers of gun owners who deplore
military style weapons. I've heard the
following explanations over the years:
1. "No one needs guns like that." (Usually
said by people that regard black guns as "ugly.")
2. "They make gun owners look like kooks."
(Usually said by people that watch TV news a lot.)
3. "Guns like that are only used to kill
people." (Usually said by hunters.)
The notion of "slippery slope" is not one that
many people understand.

President Bush and Congress to Renew the Ban
I would love to see the data. I can readily
believe that much of the non-gunowning public supports such a ban, I find it
difficult that many gun owners do given that there just isn't any
signifigant difference between a military style semi-auto rifle and the
semi-auto rifles and shotguns that millions of gun owners use for hunting
and target shooting.

New CFA Survey Finds That Consumers Support Renewing and
Strengthening the Federal Assault Weapons Ban
Washington, DC - A
new survey released today by Consumer Federation of America (CFA) found
that over a majority of the public supports renewing the federal assault
weapons ban and supports new measures to strengthen the ban.
An important finding of this survey is that a high percentage of Americans
want President Bush to persuade Congress to renew the ban. Another
significant finding is that a majority of gun owners supports renewing and
strengthening the assault weapons ban. Results of the survey
include: Sixty-two percent said they favored renewing the ban,
including 47 percent who strongly favor its renewal. Just over 50
percent of gun owners support renewing the ban, while two thirds of
non-gun owners do.
