There is currently a discussion on the PHP developer list re - Unicode. PHP has used ICU via extensions for some time, but always used the distributed versions. The current thoughts relate to making the core of PHP UTF-8 rather than single byte ASCII, and one of the options is to run ICU with the compiler switch U_CHARSET_IS_UTF8 to take advantage of the much faster UTF-8 code already built into ICU. I've seem the various threads about installing ICU in windows and the like, but does Firebird take advantage of this? I'm ore than happy with 30 ASCII characters for the metacode as long as I can simply store UTF-8 data IN the database so I've not taken much notice of the debate in this area, but I assume there has been a similar one here? ;)
