I think that extracting a script from a db in a v2.1 or v2.5 server with the purpose of creating a db from scratch in v3 is an operation that we should try to support. Isql is a basic tool and for the same reason, there's no need to restrict it to the latest server version. Some backwards compatibility may require code duplication, but not too much work. On the other hand, if people want to rework isql as an SQL client and not a GDML client, I don't know if the code would grow or shrink.
