This is another feature that I think would be welcome to Firebird.
Personally, I needed it once, and ended up storing the lat/lon in two
numerics columns, since in that specific project, all the "gis math"
was done in GoogleMaps API. But I know people that had to move to
PostgreSQL due to the lack of GIS implementation in FB:

I would not say that it is top priority, but I'm sure it is a welcome
feature, specially nowadays, where GPS is becoming very popular and is
in almost every smartphone.
