That is not true. Especially Github makes contributing a lot simpler for users or people with an itch to scratch. A user can clone your repository, make some changes and then issue a pull-request to Firebird. Developers can then evaluate the change and merge it into the repository. This is a lot simpler and requires less effort then manual patch files.
