Having slept on it (which I really should have done before trying to answer the last posts - sorry), I agree that some sort of non-system-table-update solution would be better. If GRANT VIEW is the mechanism adopted by other systems then there is a reasonable argument for following that convention, although it seems a more complex solution than necessary or appropriate for the requirement.
