A question to be answered first with this suggestion - how does gbak 
attach to server? Where are that credentials validated?

It's plugin dependent, generally not (both legacy and srp plugins do not 
pass plain password to server). But this is not too big problem, gbak at 
client certainly knows that password and can pass to server if/when 
needed (starting with execution of CREATE USER operator).
