I tried with a clean checkout of B3_0_Release and everything built
without problems.

So it looks as if my previous source tree was mangled in some way. I
had previously used to to do a build on another platform and just
zipped it up and copied it across.

So perhaps the problem, (apart from the user himself :-) ), is that
'make clean' does not make clean enough. I tried that a couple of
times, as well as re-running autogen.sh and configure.
