I meant to reply earlier - I agree this is not needed nowadays. It was added
right at the beginning of Firebird. Borland used to do it (I think), and I
just copied it. 

It is useful from a visual perspective though as it is easy to spot files
that have been edited or binaries installed from different packages. I'll
take a look at the code and see if I can fix it.
