>From the PY board Tommy D. Get the 7/16 helicoils and BB chevy studs.
Don't waste your money on the ARP stuff.
I had a shop put in helicoils on a set of my heads. The boss for rocker
studs is just small enough to cut threads for a 7/16" helicoil, but too
large to cut free standing 7/16 threads. Once this is done it's stronger
than cast iron threads.
My reason for doing this is simply having choices on the rocker studs.
For instance, I needed to pull the 2 middle exhaust valves to plug the
crossover. I was able to borrow and use and old bottleneck stud for a
puller. Also, if for whatever reason I ruin the threads on a stud I can
just go to a local parts house to buy replacements. I'm not married to a
bastard 1/2 bottom thread.
I also managed to buy a set of GM performance 7/16 top/bottom studs for
a BBC. They cost me $16.50 before shipping. They thread in and are not
too long, no need to grind the bottoms. I was charged $100 for the labor
and helicoils. Very important to let a shop do this so they are all
precisely straight.

Thanks for the assistance with my question on
converting from press in rocker arm studs to screw in
studs.
I found the right stud for use when converting Pontiac
heads. They are: ARP-290-7201, 1/2" x 13 on btm. and
7/16" X 20 on top. You can get them at Summit for $70
for 16.
Press in studs use a small 1/4 inch bolt to hold the
guide place in postion. The screw in studs sandwich
the guide plate under the stud head and the mounting
boss.
regards,
Larry
