First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Brian,Like Hugo I saw this right away when you posted the voltage at coil and fact you have a pertronix system. You may have read my post last week sort of relating to this on the voltage required for a Mallory Unilite. The starter wire you removed is a by pass for the ballast resistor allowing the full system voltage while the car is cranking. This helps the ignition to fire a cold or flooded motor with the additional spark. The ballast resistor drops the voltage while in "run" mode so the points wont fry.
Hope you get this sorted out,its hard going behind someone elses handy work. Gary Subject: RE: Subject: RE: [FGF] Hit the brake, engine dies From: "Myers, Brian" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2007 13:21:01 -0500 Found what's causing it, but not sure why. I had a mechanic look at it with me yesterday and we found that if we removed the starter relay wire (referring to the wire that supplies 12v during starting) solved the issue. It seems that after the starter disengages and voltage on this wire switches off, it somehow steals voltage from the coil. Now that we've got the coil just working off the resistor wire, it doesn't start quite as quickly, but it doesn't die either. Next thing I'm going to do is bypass the resistor wire and run a full 12v to the coil as hugo suggests below. We also found that alhtough the alternator works, it is not getting the signal to turn on. Temporarily, we wired the starter relay wire to the alternator to give it 12v during start, which turns the alternator on. It's all working now, but we're not at the root cause yet.
