I just put ball Joints in my 65 GTO, I used a ball joint install tube that just fit and drove the boot on, worked like a dream, yes it is supposed to be very snug :-) Sounds like a good idea. Drive the boot on before you install the spindle. Once the spindle is installed you can't reach the boot (that's what I did).
