First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Usually spacers are for moving the ring gear inward to mesh with the pinion gear on carriers designed for higher gear sets (lower numbers, 2:73, 3:08 etc) but running lower ratio gear sets (higher number, 4:11, 4:56 etc). Typically, the lower ratio gear sets that I have seen have smaller diameter pinion gears so that the ring gear has to be moved closer to the center of the housing. Some companies have thicker ring gears on 3:73 and 4:11 gear sets for use on 3 series carriers instead of using a spacer. Most people swappinmg gears have the exact opposite problem that you are facing. They have a 2 or 3 series carrier and want 3:73 or 4:11 gears. The companies selling the gears should be able to tell you exactly what you will need. I have a 12-bolt for my 'bird and I will have the same decisions to make when my rebuild ever gets that far but mine has a 3 series carrier. I hope I got all my numbers right. It's been a while since I was inside of one of these. Ronnie Tadlock '67 coupe
