First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Daniel,
Did you do the repair work on your car, or did you farm it out? Bobby '68 400 4-speed (yes --- outrageous) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Daniel O'Brien Sent: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 9:31 PM To: First Generation Firebird-L Subject: Re: [FGF] 400 RA III First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... There isn't much in my experience to compare it to, just motorcycles and rented 4-door sedans. But the 400 engine combined with the 4-speed manual is an absolute pleasure, just short of outrageous. There is no dip anywhere in the power curve and the party really gets rolling above 3000 rpm. Mileage is not bad at a steady 17 MPG on the highway. (Around town, I put it out of my mind.) Launching the car in 1st will easily spin the rear and I don't even have a Posi. I've also launched in 4th gear from a standing start. Warms up slowly in the winter. Until it warms up, I upshift at 1500 to avoid pushing it. The air induction holes on my hood are sealed, so I have no way of knowing how well the Ram Air works. I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference anyway. Downside is that because I did not fully understand the motor or the light rear end of the Firebird, I crashed the car on a slippery exit ramp. I was clutched in in 2nd all the way through the curve, but coming out of the curve I released to accelerate and the rear end lost it. The weather was drizzly, which motorcyclists know is more dangerous than full rain, so I did have some awareness and I was not speeding at all. But looking back, I should've been in 3rd or even 4th. It's a $4,000 lesson. But it was a single vehicle accident, no one was hurt, and the chassis is straight, so I'm counting my blessings. I'm considering sand-bagging the trunk. How much weight would I have to add to settle the rear end?
