The orginal Hursts for the '68 Firebirds (I have a '68 convertible) are held in the shifter mechanism by a clip. The aftermarket Competition Plus Hurst sticks are held in with two bolts. Also, the original Hurst shifters have a round bar; the aftermarket replacements are flatter. Check the transmission section of First Gen for more info on this and Hurst numbers. Also, contact Peter Serio at Precision Pontiac. Not only has he written a book about Hurst shifters, he knows backwards and forwards what will work on Firebirds.
The shift knob for '68s is black with the four-speed pattern. Threads are 5/16 inch, coarse. Hope this helps. Pardon my ignorance, but what's a tremec? A brand name?
