I bought my 69/400 RAIII without an oil dipstick, thinking that it would be an easy problem to solve. I was wrong. The standard 19" dipsticks that I tried did not reach the oil.
Then I learned about a 31" dipstick for Firebirds that came with A/C. Although there's no A/C in my car, there's a big gap on the left-hand side of the firewall where an A/C unit may once have been.
I bought the 31" dipstick and it reaches the oil pan. However, the oil level measures about 3" up the stick, 2" above the oil level fill markings. Also, the longer dipstick seems to be scraping the bottom of the pan, which does not seem right.
I could change the oil and mark the stick with a Sharpie, even with the higher markings I'd still have some indication of the proper oil level.
But "Experts" are telling me that since the stick is sitting on the pan, it's prone to being shattered by the vibration of the motor. This is what happened to the longer dipstick that a friend made for me -- but this dipstick was welded, perhaps improperly.
I suspect the "Experts" are wrong.
