I need some help from the brain trust. I replaced my automatic transmission
with a Muncie M21 close ratio 4-speed transmission. Actually my car never
had an engine or transmission in it. But that's beside the point. I
installed everything myself:

* New clutch from O'Reilly
* Clutch fork and bell housing
* Clutch linkage kit, including heavy duty racing clutch rod from Summit
* Hurst Competition Plus shifter

I had a transmission shop open up the transmission for an inspection. They
said it looked fine. I had them mate it to the engine (Pontiac 400). They
had to do some work on the pilot bearing. I then stabbed it into the car
and buttoned everything up.

I had it towed to a local garage for some work, and I drove it home with no
problem whatsoever. It shifted great into all four gears. Had it up to
about 60 mph, and it just motored.

Over the next few weeks I continued to work on the car, and I would take it
for occasional test drives around the block. Slowly, it became increasingly
difficult to shift into first. When the engine isn't running, I can go
through the pattern just fine. I readjusted the shifter arms thinking that
maybe something slipped (I did find two loose bolts). Now, it won't go into
first at all, and I can usually get it into second. It won't go into
reverse at all.

When I work on the car, I usually roll it out of the garage by hand. When
I'm finished, I can get it into second and feather the clutch to get it back
inside the garage.

I am a rank amateur when it comes to transmissions, but does anybody have
any idea what's going on? Since I can drive it in second and third, does
that eliminate the clutch as the problem?

I appreciate your insight.

Bobby
