I had a chevy pickup with the granny gear 4 speed.  Someone had added an 
underdash AC unit to it and to make the shifter lever clear the AC they had 
heated the lever with a torch and bent it to the necessary shape.  Perhaps that 
could be done if the area that needs to be bent will be inside the console and 
shifter boot and not seen.

The shifter I have for mine also has the offset built into the shifter  
mechanism which moves it over to come through the console. The handle does 
have  a 
bend to the back like you are wanting but there is no offset to the  passenger 
side in the handle.

I  believe the offset is actually built into the shifter, not the handle.  I  
know it is in '69.
