I had a muffler shop install a complete dual exhaust system on my pickup years
ago and they used some really crappy homemade hangers.  I didn't like them and
redid things by attaching them to the botth of the cab of the truck.  God was
the vibration awful!!  THen on a 88 LX 5.0 I used to have I noticed a vibration
around 2000 rpm.  I got to looking and saw that the tailpipe sticking out the
back was touching the underside of the bumper.  I shoved a crowbar in the
tailpipe and bent it down about a half inch - vibration gone.  Once you
"unweld" those mufflers it will probably be like a whole new car.

Thanks much for the many helpful responses on this thread.

This weekend, a buddy and I were looking at the car, and he noted that
my mufflers are welded to the frame. "Getting some vibration?" he asked.

Well, I coulda had a V-8 (400)!

Before I do any further investigation, I'm going to cut the mufflers
off the frame and hang them. Then we'll see what's what.

It's another head-scratcher about this car: why would the previous
owner weld the mufflers to the frame?

Thanks again,

Dan O'Brien
