First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... I have used with great success the PPG products. You can contact them over the internet or go to your local auto paint supplier for body shops. I use the PPG metal prep first on bare metal, and then after you rinse the metal prep off, I use the PPG Metal conditioner. They both are metal preps, but the DX520 PPG conditioner has zinc in it and leaves a milky film over the metal. This process allows you 24 hours to paint what ever you want over your metal base and holds out any rust spores from entering the metal. I live in a damp area and it is important to have a some time to prepare your metal properly. I prefer to use epoxy primer over all of my stuff. The epoxy primer also acts as a base for my body work. I let my dents go until after I have sprayed the epoxy primer on and then do my repair work. You have a 8 day window to either do your body work and/or put on the final paint job after you have sprayed on the epoxy. If you go past the 8 day window, you should lightly sand and reprimer those areas with the same epoxy. If you decide to use the epoxy, be sure to have good breathing apparatus. The epoxy does not break down and will last in your lungs forever. I have never used Eastwood paint products, but would assume that it would work over the zinc coating. The zinc is not considered a paint, but you can call Eastwood, and their tech department will tell you what you need to know. Better to be safe than sorry when using products we do not understand. I am sure that there are a hundred different ways to approach the bare metal issue, but I have yet to have any rust surface after finishing my final painting. Bob P </HTML>
