Yep it can. I had one too, and I believe they started out with the
old style vent balls, and then changed to the cross-style later in
the model year.
I don´t know excactly when that happened, but I am sure somebody over
at the UBB already discussed this topic.

I have a 1969 Convertible with 1967/1968 style A/C vent balls.
Can this be correct for an early 1969 ? My vin is 223679L10934x ,
