There are two types of alternators that my be on your firebird. One needs a voltage regulator and one has the regulator built-in, so therefore does not need an external voltage regulator. You can tell by the prong connections to the alternator. This may be your problem, I do not know. Most electrical automotive people that offer free testing on your system can detect your problem generally. I am not talking about your local automotive parts vendor, but a company that exclusively sells batteries, alternators, and starters only. Bob P.
