First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... They are flat rollers. The outer race slides off. The inner will need pressed off. I have an extra 2 design axle if you need one. They use a large thick rubber outer sealing ring the applies force on the bearing and acts as the oil seal.

I'm trying to figure out whether an outer axle bearing is bad. Years ago I had my '68 3.08 rear replaced with a '69 3.23 posi, housing and all. This housing uses tapered roller bearings that became standard in '70. The bearing looks OK, but there is lots of slop in it when you move the cage around, more than in a used front wheel bearing. I can also move the axle shaft in and out between a 16th and an 8th of an inch when the axle is installed. The outer edge of the tire is feathered around the tire, too. Before I disturb the other side, I though I ask here to see if anyone has experience with this type of bearing.
